From the Center: Looking at Lucy Lippard explores the far-reaching impact of art historian, critic, and curator Lucy Lippard’s (b. 1937, New York, NY; lives in Galisteo, NM) writings, exhibitions, and activism on contemporary art over six decades.
Organized primarily with works from the MCA Collection, each floor of the exhibition is inspired by select themes considered in [Lucy Lippard’s] writings and history of exhibitions—women artists and the aesthetics of Minimalism and Conceptualism; cultural work and activism; and land, borders, and territory—featuring artists she curated, studied, or championed and later artists whose work engages with each theme.

Vielmetter Los Angeles is pleased to present Ongoingness, a group exhibition featuring artists from the gallery’s program and anchored by a pivotal work by Pope.L that was created for his first solo exhibition with the gallery in 2015.
Samuel Levi Jones takes as his raw material the American Flag and the bound covers of law textbooks, which are shredded and pulped and thoroughly digested before he meticulously reconfigures them into thickly textured abstractions on canvas.

The history of abstraction has typically focused on a sequential progression of heroic individuals in Western art “discovering” abstract art in the early 20th century. By contrast, Material Abstractions acknowledges the global and diverse traditions of abstract art, many of which predate Western developments.

In his effort to investigate omissions and falsehoods deeply embedded within these volumes, Jones sews the book covers back together to create uncannily beautiful abstract paintings, often at a large scale.

Transforming these objects into an aesthetic quotation of their own remaking, No color in the pages marks the first substantive solo presentation of the artist’s pulp works.

Third Space is designed to temporarily disrupt the school environment and the traditional learning experience through the installation of transformative works of art. The week-long exhibit uses the arts to set the stage for students to engage in authentic and meaningful learning. In this new body of work, Jones continues his process of deconstructing academic reference books by stripping them of their covers and repurposing the materials to compose abstract paintings. The works in this exhibition are comprised specifically of fabric book jackets from art historical publications published in the last 50 years.
